On the day of the race, we pulled into the parking lot of Crystal Mountain Resort, the sun already blazing the dry, dusty dirt. The race was already underway, and our team’s first runner was on the course. We unloaded our gear at our team’s campsite, while people around us did quad stretches, hoisted pirate flags, and donned compression socks, cow costumes, and sparkles.
