Perseverance on the Mountain: Ragnar Trail POV

On the day of the race, we pulled into the parking lot of Crystal Mountain Resort, the sun already blazing the dry, dusty dirt. The race was already underway, and our team’s first runner was on the course. We unloaded our gear at our team’s campsite, while people around us did quad stretches, hoisted pirate flags, and donned compression socks, cow costumes, and sparkles.

Woodland Park: Sunrise

In the green space adjacent to the playground, someone was walking a lab whose tail was set to autowag. I crossed through the playground and entered the deserted parking lot of the Woodland Park Zoo, big pine boughs above me. Past the parking lot was a narrow dirt trail that skirted the northern perimeter of the zoo down to I-99 and then turned up the eastern perimeter before crossing a cement bridge. This bridge always felt like the entrance into Narnia, with two lampposts glowing at the far end.

Twin Peaks: The Return Offers Meditation on Grief, Feeling Life in the Moment

Two days after the dream, I entered a darkly lit theater in Northwest Film Forum to the familiar sound of the synth-heavy, nostalgic yet eerie Twin Peaks theme song, and shuffled into a seat. I was about to spend two hours watching episodes five and six of Twin Peaks: The Return (2017), as part of a collaborative screening of the entire 18-episode season held by Northwest Film Forum, SIFF, The Beacon, and The Grand Illusion Cinema between November 13 and December 16 of this year. I had only watched the first four episodes of the first season of David Lynch’s masterpiece series set in our home state. But there I sat, going in blind.

Birds of Play Hatches Whimsical Fun at Seattle Public Theater

The show is a packed variety hour (and a half) featuring all manner of dance, illusion, aerials, and comedy. Oh yeah—and birds. At the start the audience is notified that the show might be different and more interactive than they are used to: “Things may happen above you, or behind you…and if you’d like to show your approval, feel free to do a little bird call.”
